Service Opportunities

Josefina Campos '08 works with a local senior citizen in a Helping Hands Day project. Community service and volunteer opportunities connects students to lifelong learning and strong character development, while also affirming the Quaker mission upon which Whittier College was founded. The Office of Student Activities (OSA) offers students, faculty, and staff opportunities for one-time and short-term volunteer opportunities, both on campus and within the local community. Examples include a voter registration drive, annual blood drives, the Snowman/Angel Tree Project, AIDS Walk LA, and working with various local groups in need.

In addition, the College annually organizes Helping Hands Day, a daylong event in which students, faculty, and staff work together in a variety of campus and local community clean-up and other service projects, capped by a campus barbeque and festival.

As a result of their participation in these campus-sponsored service projects, several students have found long-term volunteer opportunities— some of which have led to career connections. In all, however, students engaging in these service opportunities serve to further strengthen the relationship between the college and surrounding City of Whittier, as well as deepening the spirit and pride of the Whittier College community.

If you have an idea for a service project either on-campus or in the surrounding areas, the Office of Student Activities can assist you or your organization with logistics, or get you connected with existing local agencies in need. Please contact OSA at 562.907.4986 or osa@whittier.edu.
