Leadership Programs

CURRICULUM (IN DEVELOPMENT)

Currently under development is a leadership curriculum called the Whittier Leadership Institute (WLI). WLI is a program that students may choose to enroll in at any point in their Whittier College career. The curriculum consists of a set of requirements ranging from community service, holding positions of leadership on campus, enrolling in a leadership class or taking part in workshops and also working with other students as a mentor. Students will be required to identify a faculty mentor who will also advise them through the WLI program.

First Class Leadership Seminar
First Class is an intensive, four-week seminar during January Interim session, specifically designed for first-year students. The sessions are designed to offer new students the leadership tools necessary to assist in their transition to college, and to provide them with skills essential to successful and meaningful leadership at Whittier College and beyond.

NETWORKING

Lessons on Leadership
Launched by President Sharon Herzberger in 2006,, the Lessons on Leadership program brings leaders in business, government, and not-for-profit organizations—many of whom are Whittier College alumni—to campus to meet with students and share their "secrets to success." Each fall, faculty nominate students who have demonstrated leadership potential in their academic work or extracurricular endeavors to participate in this selective program.

Guest speakers are an eclectic mix of industry leaders, scholars, and advisors who have followed different paths to success since their college years. Their examples illustrate that regardless of a student's course of study, the choices a student makes now can influence his or her future. To ensure that interactions are personal, these events are typically held in a Faculty Master's House, planned as an informal lunch or reception.
