About the Cultural Center
Whittier has long been at the forefront of diversity and multiculturalism in Southern California’s educational environment, and our Cultural Center is a vital (and widely celebrated) part of the campus community. The Center offers a wide variety of opportunities for increasing cultural interaction and dialogue on campus, and supports all students of color by providing services that help to develop career and educational goals. In
addition, the Cultural Center collaborates with faculty to develop resources that complement the curriculum and promote cultural understanding and appreciation.
In effect the Cultural Center is the focal point of many Whittier programs—academic, social, and vocational—offering programs throughout the year that educate, celebrate, and honor diversity on campus. And, the Cultural Center oversees a number of student organizations such as the Asian Student Association, Black Student Union, Hawaiian Islanders Club, Hispanic Student Association, Interfaith Program, MEChA, Native American Student Association, PARIVAR and TOBGLAD.
The staff of the Cultural Center is available to serve as advocates for students who need assistance in adjusting to college life. In addition, the Cultural Center collaborates with faculty to develop resources that expand the understanding of tolerance and cultural appreciation in the curriculum.
The Cultural Center is proud to offer a variety of programs throughout the year, including those focused on peer mentorship and leadership development. The Center's Ortiz Programs, formerly coordinated through the Center for Mexican American Affairs and named after its founder Martin Ortiz '48, seek to expand knowledge and awareness of the Latino culture, language, and history though a variety of programs and activities. The Ortiz Programs also provide academic, career, financial aid guidance primarily to first-generation Latino students. The program serves as a liaison between Latino students, parents, alumni, community organizations and the Whittier College community. All Cultural Center programs and events are designed to educate, celebrate, and honor the cultural richness on campus.
