Whittier Children's Literature Conferencer

Award-winning children's book illustrator and author Joe Cepeda will be the keynote speaker at the 2008 Whittier Children's Literature Conference. Cepeda is the illustrator of award winning picture books such as What a Truly Cool World, Nappy Hair, and Mice and Beans. The event, co-sponsored by Whittier College and Rio Hondo College, will be held Saturday, April 26, from 8:15a.m. — 12:30 p.m. it the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts, Whittier College, 6760 Painter Ave., Whittier, CA 90608.
The Whittier College Department of Education and Child Development will present the "Zilpha Keatley Snyder Award" at the conference to a teacher who has demonstrated exemplary practices encouraging and supporting children and youth to enjoy reading. Zilpha Keatley Snyder, a 1948 graduate of Whittier college and Newbery Honor Award recipient, will be a special guest speaker. She is the author of 45 books, among them: The Egypt Game, The Headless Cupid, and The Witches of Worm. Her newest children’s book, The Bronze Pen, is being published in 2008 and has already been chosen as a Junior Literary Guild Selection.
Over 20 small group sessions will be presented by exemplary local teachers, education consultants, and college faculty. Session topics titles include To be a storyteller,Connecting history and literature, and Literature circles in action.
