Majors & Minors

Guidelines for the major in theatre and communication arts

The major in theatre and communication arts requires completion of between 31-34 credits.

I. CORE COURSES (for all majors, 25-28 credits)

1. Theatre Practicum, THEA 50, (1 credit per year of residence, equaling 4 credits)
2. Introduction to Acting, THEA 110 (3 credits)
3. Introduction to Design & Technology, THEA 240 (3 credits)
4. Play Analysis & Criticism, THEA 272 (3 credits)
5. Shakespeare, THEA 328 (3 credits)
6. World Theatre, THEA 375 A, B (6 credits)
7. Senior Project, THEA 485 (3 credits)
8. And one of the following (3 credits each): Scenic Design, THEA 340; Stage Lighting, THEA 345; or Costume Design, THEA 347.

II. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Select either Performance Emphasis or Design/Technology Emphasis

A. Performance Emphasis (6 credits)
1. Fundamentals of Stage Directing, THEA 315 (3 credits)
2. And select one of the following courses (3 credits each):

  • Voice and Movement I, THEA 220
  • Voice and Movement II, THEA 225
  • Scene & Monologue Study, THEA 210
  • Performing Non-Fiction, THEA 292

B. Design/Technology Emphasis (6 credits)
Select two courses from the following list (3 credits each):

  • Drawing and Drafting for the Theatre, THEA 245
  • Painting for the Theatre, THEA 246
  • Scenic Design, THEA 340
  • Stage Lighting, THEA 345
  • Costume Design, THEA 347

Guidelines for a minor in Theatre and Communication Arts

A minor requires 20 credits, including:
1. Two Theatre Practicums, THEA 50 (2 credits)
2. Introduction to Acting, THEA 110 (3 credits)
3. Introduction to Design & Technology, THEA 240 (3 credits)
4. Play Analysis & Criticism, THEA 272 (3 credits)
5. Six (6) additional credits in courses numbered 300 and above.
