Policies and Issues
General Guidelines:
Double-dipping is allowed among any courses or sets of courses (Connections I and II) which meet the guidelines for more than one requirement and are listed as such with the exception of Freshmen Writing Seminars.
Transfer Students: The Registrar will evaluate transcripts as follows: Transfer students will be given credit for meeting specific requirements if they have taken courses that would be appropriate for those requirements, with the exception that we require that all transfer students meet the Connections I requirement at Whittier. It is conceivable that they could meet many or even all other liberal education requirements through their transfer work, but we have not established any blanket agreements that would automatically waive liberal education requirements.
Transfer students who enter Whittier with 30 or more credits do not need to satisfy the Community I and II requirements.
Transfer students who enter Whittier with fewer than 30 credits complete the Community I and II requirements as follows:
A student who enters in the fall and who has not completed the writing requirement must complete both Community I and Community II.
A student who enters in the fall and who has completed the writing requirement must complete Community II.
A student who enters in the spring must complete the Community II requirement and, if necessary, must complete the writing requirement.
Transfer credits earned after a student has matriculated at Whittier cannot be used to meet liberal education requirements.
AP Credit: Credit received for Advanced Placement (AP) from high school may be used to satisfy Liberal Education requirements as appropriate.
Study Abroad: Courses taken in study abroad programs may be counted toward liberal education requirements with the approval of the Registrar. The Connections I requirement may not be satisfied through study abroad.
