Academics
Courses & Credit
Some internship sites do require that students be enrolled for academic credit during the course of their internship, and, while the College does not impose this same rule, Whittier strongly encourages all students to do so, as well. Additionally, you are covered by the College's liability insurance during an internship only if you are enrolled in a course for credit.
A chief benefit of enrolling for academic internship credit is having a Whittier faculty advisor who can help guide and advise you throughout your work experience. Too, related assignments—such as journals, papers, and face-to-face meetings—can help you focus on what you are learning and how it connects with your other coursework and future professional plans.
Individual departments either offer an internship course (or fieldwork or practicum) or they may use Independent Study courses as the means of providing academic credit and faculty supervision for internship experiences. Please consult with your departmental advisor.
