For Sophie Fudim, Whittier College has been the perfect place to pursue a well-rounded liberal arts education.
Through the Whittier Scholars Program, Fudim designed a major in child development and education with a minor in studio art. They also participated in The Science Circus Project, a community partnership program that engages local families and students in STEM learning, and are a member of the English honor society Sigma Tau Delta.
We asked them a few questions about their life as a Poet and plans for the future.
What's next for you after graduation?
I plan to move back home to San Francisco and find a job in child care. I've been applying to preschools and summer camps and have had many interviews.
What’s a fun fact about you?
One fun fact about me is that I volunteered at a senior dog shelter (Muttville) in San Francisco for over six years.
What’s your favorite Whittier memory?
My favorite Whittier memories are all the late nights in the Wardman Gym (the art building!) doing art, all the trips into Uptown to get food and drinks, all the nights working on a puzzle in the dorm, and all the quality time I spent with my friends.
What was your favorite class at Whittier?
Some of my favorite classes at Whittier are all the art classes I've taken: Painting 1, Drawing 1, Introduction to 3D Art, Sculpture 2, and the senior art classes. I've also really enjoyed the Essentials of Public Speaking class with Katie Liddicoat and The Graphic Novel with Jonathan Burton. But there are definitely so many more classes I've enjoyed here at Whittier.
What’s your favorite spot on campus?
The Wardman Gym is my absolute favorite spot on campus. I love spending all my time making things; it's such an excellent space on campus that not everyone gets to spend lots of time in. It's a beautiful building with many exciting things to look at and many opportunities to make things.
If you could give your first-year self some advice, what would it be?
By the time you leave Whittier, you'll have changed in many ways. You'll explore new experiences, meet diverse people, discover what you enjoy, and learn from the things you'd rather not repeat. It's a journey of self-discovery and growth that shapes you into a more informed and enriched individual.
