A Look at: Living/Learning Communities

At Whittier, we do things differently. For example, our Freshman Writing courses form Living/Learning Communities. Here, ‘’First-Years’’ choose which Community to join by selecting a Freshman Writing course, which is then linked to a complementary second course from a different department. This multi-disciplinary learning extends from the classrooms to dorm rooms, as students in each Community live side-by-side in a residence hall. Take Lorna LeBrasseur '15, Tammy Le '15 and Marie Perez '15, for instance. They became roommates and friends by choosing to take ‘’From Primates to Primordial Goo.’’ They honed their writing skills in the context of exploring biology with Professor David Mbora who works with endangered primates in Kenya.
