Economics is the social science concerned about the practices, institutions, and customs societies have developed to produce and distribute goods and services. It employs a logical and ordered approach to understanding how economies work and how to deal with pressing social issues and problems.

At Whittier College, the study of economics provides students with a challenging classroom environment and opportunities to work closely with accomplished faculty. Students are given the choice of five concentrations of study leading to a degree that can prepare them for diverse career options, including working in the law, government, higher education, research, and varied business-oriented professions, or for graduate study.

Economics classes are purposely kept accessible to other majors, and the major itself is closely linked to other departments – such as political science, history, biology, English, and Spanish – through pairings and interdisciplinary courses, thus offering graduates a wide breadth of knowledge and preparation.
